Understanding Therapy

Your Questions Answered

The need for therapy

Therapy is a goal-oriented process which incorporates psychological techniques to facilitate personal and interpersonal growth. It aims to promote well-being, self-awareness, and healing amongst individuals and groups. You don’t need to be going through any mental health concern in order to go for therapy. In essence, therapy is for everyone! You can discuss what’s on your mind and get clarity on your thoughts, or simply discuss your feelings.

A good way of checking in with oneself might be to ask ourselves if we have been experiencing any of the following lately – feelings of being overwhelmed, fatigued, stressed, hopelessness, anger, negative intrusive thoughts, or social withdrawal lately. Therapy might help reduce its effects and give more clarity. It is also a space to explore oneself and promote mental well-being.

At times, we might get overwhelmed with everything that’s happening around us and may feel helpless. We tend to think that our problems are too big and that talking about it might not help. Therapists do not provide a space to talk freely, but they help you in gaining clarity and processing your emotions. Therapy is also about building skills which might help us deal with similar problems in the future.

Therapists do not prescribe medication

Therapists do not prescribe medications, rather they bring about healing and growth by engaging with the client through dialogue. However, if they feel that the client might benefit from medications, they would further refer them to a qualified professional.

Therapy promotes Independence

Therapy is goal oriented and time bound. Therapists often set goals with their clients and continually check in with them to assess their progress. Therapy often ends when the individual has met the outcomes that they set during the process of therapy. The idea of therapy is not to make the client dependent on the therapist, but to promote individuality and independence.
